Here’s a post about Outside.in recently switching from PHP to Rails.

Interestingly, they cite access to GIS functionality as one reason for the switch.
After the switch, their hosting costs were roughly the same as before and their codebase was down to just 20% of its former size!

Interesting figure you have quoted. When I read it I thought ‘wouldn’t refactoring any application (php or not) after it has been built result in significant size reductions?’

Yes, good point. We don’t really know how much (if indeed any) of the reduction came as a result of their switch to Rails.

Getting down to 20% is a pretty nice result, though ;-)
